NBC Sports’ lead broadcaster Mike Tirico was forced to abandon his on‑air duties at the 151‑st Kentucky Derby on Saturday after suffering what he later called a “significant” allergic reaction to nuts. Tirico, who has a long‑known nut allergy, had been anchoring NBC’s coverage from Churchill Downs when the episode struck, prompting medical attention and an abrupt exit from the broadcast.
According to NBC, Tirico began experiencing symptoms early in the afternoon. I'm unclear on what initially caused the episode, but as someone with a younger brother with severe food allergies (dairy, eggs, peanuts, and oranges) I can tell you that sporting events were always a problem due to shelled peanuts and dust scattered througout the sporting complex and bleachers. Studio host Ahmed Fareed told viewers, “Mike does have a nut allergy. He had a reaction earlier today… he is feeling fine now, but he’s going to stay on the sideline.” Fareed stepped in for the balance of the telecast, which included the Triple Crown’s opening jewel and its extensive pre‑race pageantry.
From his hotel room, Tirico posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he hated being a “late scratch” but thanked track officials, NBC colleagues Randy Moss, Jerry Bailey and Fareed, as well as “my Syracuse fam,” for covering the broadcast. “If you have [a nut allergy] you know how it can knock you down,” he added, stressing that he was recovering and in stable condition.
An NBC Sports spokesperson confirmed Tirico left Churchill Downs in mid‑afternoon, was treated on‑site, and then returned to his hotel for observation. No epinephrine‑requiring escalation or hospitalization was reported, and network officials expect him back on air once cleared by doctors. For educational puproses, food allergies can cause a severe reaction called "anaphylactic shock" which causes intense swelling through the body and hives, but most critically, swelling of throat and the respiratory system often requriing an "epi-pen" to reduce swelling enough to restore function of the airway.
We at Aurescope are glad he's doing okay. However, because we've been personally affected by food allergies, we know how tough it is to have a fulfulling diet when it's so limited. Consider checking out this cook book we found online to help spice things up for the allergic.
